Notice to Residents: Annual Hydrant Flushing Has Begun
The Department of Public Works (DPW) has begin its annual hydrant flushing program. This important maintenance helps ensure our fire hydrants are operating properly, improves water quality, and helps remove sediment from the water distribution system.
What to Expect
- You may see DPW crews working in your neighborhood and water flowing from fire hydrants.
- During flushing, you may notice temporary drops in water pressure or brief discoloration of your water. While the water remains safe, it may appear rusty or cloudy due to disturbed sediment.
- Water discoloration is temporary and should clear after running the cold water from your faucet for several minutes.
What You Should Do
- If possible, avoid doing laundry while hydrant flushing is taking place in your neighborhood, as discolored water may stain light-colored fabrics.
- Before washing clothes after flushing has occurred, check that your cold water is running clear.
- If you experience discolored water, run the cold water from the faucet closest to your water meter until it clears.
